The story of Demon Slayer takes place in Japan during the Taishō era. Tanjirō Kamado, the hero of the series, is the son of a family of charcoal merchants. His father died a few years earlier, and to support his family, he sells charcoal in town.
In town, a rumor circulates: at nightfall, there's a demon ready to kill nearby. Unable to return home, Tanjirō spends the night with a good Samaritan. Upon his return, he finds his family decimated by the man-eating demon. Nezuko, his younger sister, is the sole survivor of this massacre but has been transformed into a demon herself.
As Tanjirō is attacked by her, he is helped by a demon slayer named Giyū Tomioka. While attempting to eliminate Nezuko, Giyū quickly realizes the bond she shares with Tanjirō and decides to abandon the fight by sheathing his sword.
Giyū then advises Tanjirō to go to Master Sakonji Urokodaki, who can train him to become a demon slayer. This is how Tanjirō's quest begins to find an antidote to restore his little sister to her human form.
